As a Resident Assistant, you are required to assist with Move-In. Throughout the Move-In period, each RA will be assigned shifts to support residents, families, and the overall operation. Move-In is one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year. It requires teamwork, flexibility, and a positive attitude. While the days can be long and physically demanding, the impact you make on a resident's first impression of Colonia de la Paz is invaluable. To ensure a smooth and welcoming experience, we utilize several stations throughout the Move-In process.
Welcome Station
The Welcome Station is often the first interaction residents and their families have with Colonia de la Paz. Your role is to greet residents, answer questions, explain the Move-In process, and create a welcoming atmosphere. Think of this position like representing a student organization at a campus event—it requires enthusiasm, confidence, and a willingness to engage with everyone who walks up. A smile and positive energy go a long way!
Moving Bin Station
The Moving Bin Station manages the checkout and return of moving bins used by residents. This role requires clear communication, organization, and attention to detail. You will interact with many residents throughout your shift, use Google Forms to track bins, and help keep the process running efficiently. Being direct, friendly, and comfortable with technology is key to success at this station.
Room Runner & Resource Station
As a Room Runner, you'll help residents and families navigate the building by escorting them to their rooms and answering questions along the way. This is one of the most active positions during Move-In—you'll spend much of your shift walking throughout the building, providing directions, sharing resources, and ensuring residents know where to go. Your guidance helps create a smooth, welcoming, and less stressful Move-In experience.
Shift Assignments
All shifts will be scheduled during training and will be enetered on Shifts on Teams App as well as the resources below, you can access an excel schedule.
Wear your RA shirt, lanyard, and name tag at all times so residents and families can easily identify you.
Return your walkie-talkie to the charging station in the staff office at the end of each day.
Stay hydrated. Arizona heat is no joke—carry a water bottle and drink water throughout your shift.
Get plenty of sleep. A good night's rest helps you stay energized and provide excellent customer service.
Be approachable. Smile, greet everyone, and make eye contact. You may be someone's very first impression of the University of Arizona.
Know the building. Be familiar with room locations, elevators, restrooms, amenities, and common questions before your shift begins.
Offer help before you're asked. If you see someone who looks confused or overwhelmed, check in and offer assistance.
Limit personal phone use. Stay present and available while you're on shift.
Dress for the weather. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat if you're working outside.
Eat before your shift and bring a snack. Move-In days are long, and you'll need the energy.
Keep your radio on and monitor it. Respond professionally and communicate important information promptly.
Work as a team. If another station gets busy, jump in and help whenever you can.
Remember your role. You're not just moving residents in—you are helping create a welcoming and memorable first experience in their new home.
Be patient. Residents and families may be stressed, tired, or emotional. A calm, positive attitude can make all the difference.
Have fun! Your enthusiasm is contagious and helps set the tone for an incredible year at Colonia de la Paz.
Remember: Every interaction matters. Residents may forget what you said, but they'll remember how you made them feel. A friendly attitude and willingness to help can turn a stressful day into an exciting beginning.
